The Central Bank of Belize has unveiled the designs for a new National Symbols Coin Series, a redesign of Belize’s circulating coins that highlights the country’s map and national symbols while keeping their value unchanged. The new series, minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, is due to enter circulation in September 2026 and is intended to complement the 2025 National Heroes banknote series as part of a more distinctly Belizean currency set. The BZ $1.00 coin features the map of Belize, while the other five denominations depict national symbols. Existing coins bearing Queen Elizabeth II will remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the new series, with no need for the public to deposit or exchange current coins. The coins keep familiar sizes and general characteristics, but move to nickel-plated and bronze-plated steel, resulting in slight weight changes. The one-cent coin will have a 10-sided edge and the one-dollar coin a bronze appearance. Once issued, the coins will be distributed through normal cash transactions at commercial banks, credit unions and businesses. Separately, the central bank will issue a limited-edition painted 50-cent Mahogany Tree collector coin that will be sold as a numismatic item and will not enter general circulation.
