The Central Bank of Egypt hosted the 9th Annual Conference of Mediterranean Central Banks in Cairo under the theme “Harnessing Innovation and Integration for Sustainable and Inclusive Development in the Mediterranean Region”, bringing together central bank governors from Euro-Mediterranean countries alongside policymakers, academics and international financial institutions. The conference was organised in collaboration with Banco de España, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the European Institute of the Mediterranean and the Union for the Mediterranean. Discussions were structured around four sessions covering the use of artificial intelligence in central banking and the financial sector, financing for sustainable development including the green transition, financial inclusion initiatives, and financial integration. The integration session considered an OECD report on strengthening regional integration, improving digital infrastructure and achieving greater alignment between fiscal and monetary policies. Banco de España was announced as host for the next edition, and participating central banks agreed to hold a staff-level technical preparatory meeting four months before the conference to support alignment, coordination and exchange of expertise.
