The South African Reserve Bank published South Africa’s end-April 2026 template on international reserves and foreign currency liquidity, covering the short-term foreign currency assets of the Bank and the central government and the foreign currency liabilities of both. It shows official reserve assets of USD 77.089 billion, made up of USD 51.235 billion in foreign currency reserves, USD 18.700 billion in gold, USD 6.258 billion in special drawing rights, USD 896 million in the International Monetary Fund reserve position and USD 4 million in other reserve assets. Within foreign currency reserves, securities amounted to USD 36.304 billion and deposits to USD 14.931 billion, including USD 14.826 billion with banks headquartered outside South Africa and USD 105 million with other central banks, the Bank for International Settlements and the International Monetary Fund. Predetermined short-term net drains show central government foreign currency outflows within one year of USD 889 million in principal and USD 1.936 billion in interest, alongside net long forward and futures positions of USD 586 million and other contingent liabilities of USD 1.317 billion. Memorandum items show USD 73.553 billion of reserves in SDR basket currencies including gold and USD 3.536 billion in non-SDR basket currencies.
