The Hong Kong Monetary Authority reported that total deposits with authorized institutions rose 1.4% in August 2026, while total loans and advances increased 0.3%. In the year to end-August, deposits grew 7.3% and loans increased 7.0%. The authority cautioned that monthly monetary statistics can be volatile and should be assessed over longer periods. Hong Kong dollar deposits rose 2.2% during the month, outpacing Hong Kong dollar loan growth and lowering the Hong Kong dollar loan-to-deposit ratio to 69.3% from 70.7% at end-July. Foreign currency deposits increased 0.8%, while renminbi deposits fell 2.1% to RMB 1,101.5 billion. Cross-border trade settlement remittances increased to RMB 1,537.6 billion from RMB 1,383.7 billion in July. Total M2 and M3 each rose 1.4% in August and 11.0% from a year earlier.
