The National Bank of Romania published its monetary indicators for May 2026, showing continued nominal growth in money supply, lending and deposits. Broad money M3 stood at RON 806.1 billion at end-May, up 1.6 percent from April and 7.5 percent from a year earlier. Nongovernment credit reached RON 465.0 billion, rising 1.6 percent month on month and 7.7 percent year on year, while government credit increased 1.7 percent on the month and 8.8 percent on the year to RON 283.3 billion. Within M3, narrow money M1 rose 2.4 percent from April and 6.0 percent from May 2025, while deposits with an initial maturity of up to two years increased 0.4 percent on the month and 9.7 percent on the year. The counterparts to M3 were net external assets of RON 406.4 billion, up 14.0 percent year on year, and net domestic assets of RON 399.7 billion, up 1.6 percent. In lending, leu-denominated credit, which accounted for 66.9 percent of nongovernment credit, rose 0.3 percent on the month and 3.2 percent on the year, while foreign currency credit expressed in leu, with a 33.1 percent share, increased 4.1 percent on the month and 18.1 percent on the year. Resident nongovernment deposits totaled RON 683.4 billion, up 1.6 percent from April and 7.7 percent from a year earlier, with leu deposits rising 0.8 percent on the month and foreign currency deposits expressed in leu increasing 3.3 percent.
