The Central Bank of Chile has reminded the public that it offers a free service to assess banknotes and coins damaged by accidental events, following flooding in several southern regions of the country. If the cash is confirmed to be authentic, the bank reimburses the amount that can be validated from the damaged money. The notice urges affected individuals not to discard damaged cash and to handle it carefully to avoid further deterioration. Banknotes and coins should be separated, air-dried on a clean, flat and ventilated surface, and not cleaned, disinfected, counted or repaired with tape or glue. The bank also advises storing the damaged pieces in a labeled plastic bag, using double bagging where mold, fungi or contamination risk is present. In regions outside the Metropolitan Region, damaged coins must be submitted through authorized bank branches. In the Metropolitan Region, submissions can also be made at the Central Bank of Chile's public service desk.
