The White House published a Cuban Independence Day statement saying the President has enacted new sanctions on Cuba’s military and intelligence apparatus and on those that provide it with material and financial support. It framed the move as part of a broader effort to cut off financial lifelines to regimes in Central and South America that it said fund transnational criminal and terrorist operations and pose national security threats to the United States. According to the statement, the sanctions are intended to deprive the Cuban regime and its elites of resources and profits derived from the population’s suffering. The White House also cited what it described as the January capture and extradition of Nicolas Maduro as a warning to allies in Havana, and reiterated the administration’s view that the United States will not tolerate Cuba hosting hostile foreign military, intelligence, and terror operations near US territory.
