The Bank of the Lao reported on Deputy Governor Soulisak Thamnouvong’s participation in the 32nd ASEAN Senior Level Committee meeting, where regional central banks discussed changing global and regional macroeconomic conditions, artificial intelligence in finance and banking, and policy challenges arising from capital account liberalization. The meeting was the committee’s last before its integration into the ASEAN central bank deputy governors’ meeting framework. Participants adopted an analysis of the challenges in designing measures to preserve macroeconomic stability as capital accounts are liberalized, intended to guide future regional cooperation. Building on the committee’s earlier focus on ASEAN capital market development, Thamnouvong promoted sustainable finance and green bonds, citing Lao PDR’s first green bond to support a nationwide electric vehicle charging network and the clean energy transition. The new ASEAN central banking cooperation structure is scheduled to convene in Singapore in 2027 and align with the ASEAN cooperation vision for 2026-2030.
