The Oman Financial Services Authority held a practical workshop for Sultan Qaboos University students on building and testing an investment portfolio, as part of its financial and investment literacy efforts. The session focused on translating theory into practice by covering investment fundamentals, asset allocation, risk management, the risk-return trade-off and diversification to reduce unsystematic risk. Students then built their own portfolios by selecting between eight and 12 listed stocks on the Muscat Stock Exchange and assigning allocations based on portfolio objectives and risk tolerance, using simple tools including paper and Microsoft Excel. Those portfolios were tested against simulated market conditions including a 15% broad market decline, strong growth in some sectors and wider economic crisis scenarios, with participants reviewing portfolio performance, exposure and the strengths and weaknesses of different investment choices. The authority linked the workshop to its broader strategy of developing the financial capabilities of Omani youth and supporting more informed investment decision-making.
