The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced that Sanjay Wadhwa will depart the agency on 31 January 2025, ending his tenure as Acting Director of the Division of Enforcement after more than 21 years at the Commission. Wadhwa has served as Acting Director since October 2024 and previously as Deputy Director since August 2021. During his time as Deputy and Acting Director, the Division of Enforcement filed more than 2,600 enforcement actions and obtained orders for more than USD 20 billion in disgorgement, prejudgment interest, and civil penalties, with billions returned to harmed investors. His leadership emphasized vigorous enforcement alongside cooperation credit and was associated with record financial remedies and increased self-reporting and remediation by market participants; earlier roles included senior posts in the New York Regional Office and oversight of investigations such as the 2016–2020 review of abusive American depositary receipt pre-release practices that resulted in more than USD 430 million in penalties.
