The Hellenic Capital Market Commission issued a statement welcoming the election of Greece’s Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, as President of the Eurogroup. It noted this is the first time a Greek minister has been elected to the role and framed the result as reflecting increased confidence in Greece and its role in European economic governance. In the context of its mandate to support the proper functioning of the capital market and protect investors, the Commission highlighted Pierrakakis’ identification of completing the Savings and Investments Union as a top European priority and said it will work closely with the new Eurogroup President to strengthen the Greek and deepen the European capital market.
