The New Brunswick Financial and Consumer Services Commission launched a consumer education campaign explaining the province’s protections for the titles “financial advisor” and “financial planner.” Throughout October, the campaign will outline what the protected titles mean, how the two roles differ and what consumers should ask when choosing a financial professional. The Financial Advisor and Financial Planner Title Protection Act took effect on Jan. 1, 2026. Individuals using either title or a similar title must hold a Commission approved credential and be overseen by an approved credentialing body, although transition periods apply to eligible individuals who used the titles before the law took effect. Consumers may submit complaints to the Commission about suspected improper title use by individuals who do not qualify for a transition period.
