The Hong Kong Monetary Authority published a scam alert after receiving a report of online fraud associated with China CITIC Bank International Limited, with a link on the HKMA website to the bank’s related press release. The alert concerns a fraudulent website and reiterates that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, nor will they request sensitive information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords by phone, email or SMS (including via embedded hyperlinks). Individuals who have provided personal information or conducted financial transactions in response to the scam are advised to contact the relevant bank using details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force.
