The U.S. Department of Justice is returning USD 2,507,911.73 in net forfeiture proceeds to The Gambia to compensate eligible victims of former President Yahya Jammeh’s regime. An agreement with the Gambian government requires the funds to be distributed under the Gambian Victims Reparations Act of 2023 to people harmed by Jammeh’s corruption and abuse of office. The money came from the sale of a mansion in Potomac, Maryland, that Jammeh and his wife, Zineb Jammeh, purchased using criminal proceeds and misappropriated public funds. The Justice Department forfeited and liquidated the property after alleging that Jammeh embezzled public money, solicited bribes and used shell companies and overseas trusts to launder the proceeds.
