The National Bank of Denmark has published data showing that interest-only mortgage debt rose to DKK 911.8 billion at the end of August 2026, representing 48.7% of homeowners’ total mortgage debt. The amount has increased each month since autumn 2024 and is approaching the level of amortizing mortgage debt, which has grown more slowly and is reduced through regular repayments. The prevalence of interest-only debt varies substantially by location. Based on end-June 2026 data, it exceeded 70% of homeowners’ mortgage debt in Gentofte, Hørsholm and Rudersdal, but was below 21% in Billund, Lolland and Tønder. Since 2024, the share has increased in almost two-thirds of municipalities, with the highest concentrations in North Zealand, Greater Copenhagen and Aarhus.
