The Central Bank of Chile, together with Carabineros de Chile, has launched a public campaign urging consumers and merchants to check the security features of banknotes and coins before accepting them. The campaign responds to increased cash use around the Independence Day holidays, when seasonal factors can lift demand by up to 50% compared with an average month. Outreach will take place across the country from Sept. 16 to 19. Anyone who receives a suspected counterfeit should not recirculate it and should instead surrender it to a bank branch, the Central Bank or Carabineros de Chile for authentication. Genuine cash will be returned or reimbursed, while counterfeit pieces will not be reimbursed.
