The Reserve Bank of Fiji has clarified who may conduct foreign exchange business after receiving information that some retailers, hotels and members of the public were operating without the required licence. Conducting a foreign currency exchange business without a licence is a criminal offence, and the bank reiterated that Fiji has six licensed commercial banks and eight restricted foreign exchange dealers. Hotels and retailers may accept foreign currency from tourists only as payment for goods or services. They must provide any change in Fijian dollars and deposit or sell the foreign currency to a licensed commercial bank or restricted foreign exchange dealer within 30 days. The Reserve Bank will take enforcement action against unauthorized operators and advised the public to transact only with licensed dealers.
