The Bank of Korea reported that Korean won-based export and import prices fell in August from the previous month but remained substantially higher than a year earlier. Export prices declined 3.7% month on month and rose 42.4% year on year, while import prices fell 2.4% on the month and increased 15.6% annually. Export growth continued to outpace import growth on a U.S. dollar basis. Export volumes rose 25.9% year on year and export values increased 75.8%, compared with gains of 12.0% and 23.1%, respectively, for imports. The net barter terms of trade improved 27.1% from a year earlier and 1.5% from July, while the income terms of trade index rose 60.0% annually. The August figures are preliminary.
