The Central Bank of Egypt has issued rules governing a digital financial identity system for electronic customer identification and verification, or eKYC. The framework will allow customers to open bank accounts and access banking products and services through digital channels without visiting a branch. The system also supports electronic acceptance of terms and conditions, electronic authentication in place of handwritten signatures and remote customer data updates. The rules establish governance arrangements and participating parties’ responsibilities, alongside technical, operational, data protection and cybersecurity requirements.
