The European Commission has profiled Danish startup Decameal’s plans to expand production of marine protein and other ingredients from shore crabs, an abundant species that disrupts coastal ecosystems and fisheries. The company uses mechanical and thermal separation to process the entire crab without chemicals, producing ingredients for aquaculture and pet food as well as shell-derived chitosan for plant health applications. Decameal operates a pilot plant that can process two tonnes of crabs per day and is fulfilling its first larger-scale aquafeed order. It has raised about EUR 3 million in grants and equity from business angels, venture capital funds and corporate investors. After winning the Ocean Bioresources category at BlueInvest Day 2026, the company plans a seed funding round at the end of 2027 to finance a plant capable of processing up to 40,000 tonnes annually.
