The Central Bank of Uruguay reported that its regional review of South American central banks found all institutions covered routinely use artificial intelligence in some communications tasks. Privacy and information security were unanimously identified as the main concern. The presentation also examined AI tools that support the production of monetary policy communications and assessment of their subsequent impact. At the regional central bank presidents’ meeting, authorities also reviewed financial conditions and payment system developments. A regional payments report found that retail payments per adult increased 345% between 2018 and 2025, with instant payments driving digitalization and merchant acquiring becoming more open, interoperable and competitive. The authorities agreed to hold their next meeting in Uruguay in 2027. Planned work will cover an updated regional payments report, post-pandemic labor market developments and their relationship with monetary policy cycles, and a comparison of macroprudential frameworks.
