The South African Reserve Bank published its monthly statement of assets and liabilities as at 30 April 2026, showing total assets and total equity and liabilities of ZAR 1,351,264,975,635, down ZAR 32,482,040,643 from March. The decline was concentrated in gold and foreign assets, which fell to ZAR 1,293,367,045,875 from ZAR 1,328,083,245,691. Foreign exchange reserves excluding Special Drawing Rights fell ZAR 31,713,280,349 to ZAR 867,827,657,019, Special Drawing Rights holdings decreased ZAR 714,595,428 to ZAR 111,806,016,535, and gold declined ZAR 2,288,324,039 to ZAR 313,733,372,321. On the liability side, deposits by banks rose ZAR 13,954,700,852 to ZAR 374,379,939,225, while notes and coin in circulation fell ZAR 914,718,098 to ZAR 179,732,296,099, South African government foreign loans and deposits dropped ZAR 22,366,470,842 to ZAR 65,699,044,163, and the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve fell ZAR 13,243,237,170 to ZAR 361,512,828,194. Domestic holdings of South African government securities increased ZAR 1,151,304,885 to ZAR 37,974,395,764.

The South African Reserve Bank’s monthly statement of assets and liabilities as at 30 April 2026 reported total assets and total equity and liabilities of ZAR 1,351,264,975,635, down ZAR 32,482,040,643 from March. The decline was driven by lower gold and foreign assets, including a ZAR 31,713,280,349 fall in foreign exchange reserves excluding Special Drawing Rights to ZAR 867,827,657,019 and a ZAR 2,288,324,039 decrease in gold to ZAR 313,733,372,321, partly offset by higher bank deposits and increased domestic holdings of South African government securities.
