Greece's Ministry of National Economy and Finance announced that Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis is in Brussels to attend the Eurogroup and ECOFIN meetings on 11 and 12 December, with the Eurogroup set to elect a new president and Pierrakakis standing as a candidate. Before the vote, euro area finance ministers will review current macroeconomic developments, draft national budgets and the overall fiscal outlook for 2026, and hold an exchange of views with the International Monetary Fund. Following the election, the same ministers meeting as the Board of Governors of the European Stability Mechanism will discuss Bulgaria’s accession to the ESM and the appointment of a new chair of the ESM Board of Governors. ECOFIN will focus on advancing the Savings and Investment Union, the single currency legislative package with an emphasis on the digital euro, and reforms to the Customs Union aimed at simplifying procedures and strengthening public revenues. Under the 2026 European Semester, ministers will also consider euro area economic policy recommendations, implementation of the Stability and Growth Pact, and the European Court of Auditors’ annual report on the European Union budget.
