The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority has welcomed the Treasurer’s announcement that current APRA member Therese McCarthy Hockey and David Bradbury will be appointed as joint Deputy Chairs for five year terms. McCarthy Hockey is due to start on 9 July 2026 and Bradbury on 1 September 2026. The appointments create a two-Deputy-Chair structure at APRA and set the board’s industry oversight so that McCarthy Hockey continues to oversee banking and Bradbury takes responsibility for superannuation once he joins. Until Bradbury begins, APRA Chair John Lonsdale will retain oversight of the superannuation industry, while APRA member Suzanne Smith will continue to oversee general, life and private health insurance. McCarthy Hockey has been at APRA for eight years and on the board since October 2022, with responsibility for banking supervision, strategy, risk and compliance, alongside more than 20 years of financial markets experience. Bradbury brings more than 25 years of experience in economic policy, regulation and public administration, including as Chair of the Board of Taxation, in senior roles at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, at KPMG Australia, and as Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer between 2010 and 2013.
