The Bank of Tanzania issued a public clarification on the ongoing withdrawal from circulation of TZS 10,000 and TZS 5,000 banknotes from the 2003 issue, following public confusion with similar-looking 2010 issue notes. It confirmed that only the 2003 issue is being removed, while the 2010 issue continues to be valid. The central bank said the exchange exercise for the 2003 issue started on 6 January 2025 and runs until 5 April 2025, as set out in Government Notices Nos. 857 and 858 of 11 October 2024. The 2003 issue notes will cease to be legal tender from 6 April 2025, while 2010 issue notes and their variants remain in circulation, including those bearing specified combinations of Minister of Finance and Bank of Tanzania Governor signatures. The clarification reiterates that holders of the 2003 issue notes must exchange them by 5 April 2025, after which they will no longer be usable for payments.
