The South African Reserve Bank published its statement of assets and liabilities as at 31 December 2024, showing total assets of ZAR 1,281,422,043,575 and a broadly matching total for equity and liabilities, up around ZAR 37.51bn from November 2024. The increase was driven by higher gold and foreign assets, which rose to ZAR 1,226,684,925,218, including foreign exchange reserves excluding special drawing rights of ZAR 913,121,849,468 and special drawing right holdings of ZAR 115,926,613,638. On the liabilities side, notes and coin in circulation increased to ZAR 180,944,234,514, deposits by banks rose to ZAR 323,660,427,185, and the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve increased to ZAR 343,747,156,096. The statement also reported gold holdings of 4,033,489 fine ounces and a rand gold price of ZAR 48,998.88 per fine ounce.
