The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) marked World Investor Week 2025 with an investor awareness and education campaign focused on risks in the digital financial environment, with particular emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI). As part of the initiative, CySEC is preparing an Investor Guide for Safe Navigation in the Digital Financial World addressing the growing use of AI-powered tools for investment suggestions and the potential for unsuitable decisions and losses. The guide warns that AI tools are not authorised to provide personalised investment advice, have no legal obligation to act in investors’ best interests, and may generate manipulated or inaccurate outputs, including “AI hallucinations”. Outreach activities included CySEC-led lectures in schools and universities in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, media participation across television and radio, op-eds and interviews, a targeted social media campaign with daily practical tips, and publication of a Smart Investor booklet; CySEC leadership also highlighted risks such as opaque algorithms, misaligned incentives, accountability gaps, poor data quality, and privacy and data security issues. The forthcoming investor guide and supporting materials will be made available through CySEC’s Financial Education Portal, which also hosts a recently launched online quiz for investors; the lecture programme will run until the end of 2025.
