The Ghana National Insurance Commission outlined its strategy for strengthening the insurance sector during stakeholder engagements in the Volta Region. The three-pillar approach focuses on improving market conduct, expanding insurance coverage and building public trust, supported by stronger risk-based supervision, compliance monitoring and regulatory inspections. The commission is increasingly assessing insurers on profitability, compliance and capital adequacy rather than primarily on production volumes. It is also pursuing more inclusive products and distribution through transport unions, universities and youth programs, including potential coverage for commercial drivers’ vehicle breakdowns, income losses from downtime and family welfare needs. Other measures include action against undercutting and noncompliance, the Campus Care initiative and a Retirees Forum for industry mentorship and knowledge-sharing.
