The Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) and the Australian Banking Association (ABA) have jointly appointed Sean Hughes as the next Chair of the Banking Code Compliance Committee (BCCC), replacing outgoing Chair Ian Govey AM. In the role, Hughes will oversee the committee’s monitoring of Banking Code compliance. Hughes is currently General Counsel for Vanguard Investments Australia. He previously served as a Commissioner at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) from 2018 to 2023, including work implementing recommendations from the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry, and oversight of banking, credit and payment systems as well as ASIC’s response to COVID-related hardship measures for bank customers. His three-year term as Chair is due to commence in early 2026.
