The Central Bank of Peru has put into circulation, from 16 July 2025, a PEN 1 coin featuring the Vicús culture as the third issue in its “Pre-Columbian Peruvian Ceramics” numismatic series. The coin is legal tender and will circulate alongside existing coins. The issue forms part of an 11-coin collection aimed at promoting Peru’s cultural heritage and encouraging numismatic interest. The coin is minted in 2025 in alpaca alloy, weighs 7.32g, has a 25.50mm diameter and a reeded edge, with an issuance of 10 million units. The obverse shows Peru’s coat of arms with the legend “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ”, while the reverse depicts a ceramic vessel associated with the Vicús culture and includes the phrases “CULTURA VICÚS” and “CERÁMICA PRECOLOMBINA”, plus the mint mark of the National Mint. From the same date, presentation cases containing the coin will be offered for sale and can only be purchased via the central bank’s online sales portal.
