The Central Bank of Uruguay published an account of a public discussion between its president, Guillermo Tolosa, and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Georgieva assessed Uruguay as well positioned to withstand external shocks because of its macroeconomic fundamentals and institutions, despite persistent uncertainty in the global economy. She highlighted progress in Uruguay’s monetary policy framework and emphasized institutional strengthening and technical capacity. Georgieva also reiterated the IMF’s technical assistance role, with cooperation focused on supporting economic policy frameworks, low and stable inflation, and resilience. Uruguay has had no credit commitments to the IMF since 2006.
