The European Commission has launched the Bio-based Europe Alliance (BEA), a voluntary initiative connecting European buyers, producers, suppliers and public authorities to strengthen demand for bio-based materials and products. More than 100 stakeholders have joined. European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall launched the alliance at the Global Bioeconomy Summit in Dublin on Oct. 21. It addresses a barrier identified in the EU’s Bioeconomy Strategy: weak demand and limited product visibility prevent many companies from moving from research and demonstration to commercial deployment. The alliance will help participants develop lead markets and make demand more visible and predictable, supporting investment in new facilities and the expansion of production. Participating organisations will jointly develop its activities and scope. The initiative will complement forthcoming EU regulatory measures supporting production and market uptake, alongside efforts to improve access to finance. At the summit, the Bioeconomy Investment Deployment Group held its second meeting, advancing the financing initiative for which the Commission sought participants in May. Members agreed on a roadmap for the coming year to address financing gaps and strengthen the pipeline of projects ready for investment. The group, actively supported by the European Investment Bank, will also discuss investment needs in the preparation of the next Multiannual Financial Framework. Its next plenary meeting is planned for 2027.
