The Bank of Italy announced that it is participating in a Eurosystem pilot project designed to give researchers access to anonymized confidential statistical data collected from the financial sector across all euro-area countries. The initiative aims to facilitate independent research and strengthen cross-country economic analysis of financial dynamics in the euro area. Through its Research Data Center, the Bank of Italy has since 2023 enabled research use of individual anonymized data on Italian banks’ balance sheet items (iBSI) and interest rates (iMIR) via its Remote Execution System (REX) and, since 2025, its onsite lab (LabBI). Under the Eurosystem pilot, the Bank of Italy and other national central banks will serve as data access points, providing researchers with access to anonymized datasets in a secure environment or offering remote execution where the data are processed on the researchers’ behalf. The pilot will test the effectiveness and usability of different access modes, with an assessment after 18 months on whether to create a permanent infrastructure for research purposes.
