The Bank of Spain has published payment statistics for Spain for the second half of 2025, showing that non-cash payment transactions rose 10.8% from the same period a year earlier to 10.369 billion operations. The total value of those payments increased 1.9% to EUR 6.5 trillion. Cards represented 65.9% of transactions by volume, ahead of transfers at 15.8%, direct debits at 11.2% and electronic money transactions at 1.7%. By value, however, transfers accounted for 87.9% of non-cash payments, compared with 3.4% for cards, indicating that cards remained the main instrument for smaller payments while transfers were used for higher-value transactions. Within that total, card payments increased 11.4% to 6.831 billion transactions and 10.5% in value to EUR 219 billion, with an average transaction value of EUR 32.1. Remote card payments made up 19.1% of card transactions and 30% of card payment value, while contactless payments at physical point-of-sale terminals rose 11.6% to 5.280 billion and represented 95.6% of non-remote card payments by number. Transfers increased 6.9% to 1.637 billion transactions and 1.4% in value to EUR 5.7 trillion, while electronically initiated instant transfers rose 33.1% by number to 636 million and 229.2% by value to EUR 216 billion. Direct debits increased 2.3% to 1.161 billion transactions and 5.4% in value to EUR 372 billion, and electronic money transactions rose 18% to 175 million operations with value up 17.2% to EUR 9 billion. The data also show that the stock of payment cards rose 10.2% to about 126 million, or around 2.5 cards per inhabitant. The number of automated teller machines fell 1% to 37,017, while reported point-of-sale terminals increased 10.4% to about 4.7 million.
