The South African Reserve Bank published its monthly statement of assets and liabilities as at 31 August 2025, reporting total assets and total equity and liabilities of ZAR 1.303 trillion, down ZAR 3.272 billion from end-July 2025. The decrease was mainly reflected in total gold and foreign assets of ZAR 1.248 trillion, down ZAR 3.007 billion, as foreign exchange reserves excluding special drawing rights (SDRs) fell to ZAR 888.738 billion and SDR holdings declined to ZAR 115.146 billion. Gold increased to ZAR 243.740 billion, alongside a higher rand gold price of ZAR 60,416.62 per fine ounce and gold holdings of 4,034,326 fine ounces. On the liabilities side, notes and coin in circulation rose to ZAR 172.886 billion, while the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve account fell to ZAR 354.757 billion and banks’ deposits declined to ZAR 312.636 billion; South African government foreign loans and deposits increased to ZAR 89.486 billion.
