The Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) announced that King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has approved an official symbol for the Saudi riyal, and that the symbol will be introduced gradually for use in financial and commercial transactions. The symbol was developed under a SAMA-led project involving the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Media, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization. Designed to “the highest technical standards”, it incorporates the name of the national currency, “Riyal”, in a form derived from Arabic calligraphy, and is intended to provide a consistent way to represent the Saudi riyal in domestic, regional and international contexts. Implementation will be phased in, with coordination across relevant entities.
