The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported that Project NoCargo, conducted with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada and other partners, intercepted and recovered 392 fraudulently acquired vehicles valued at an estimated CAD 28 million over the past year. The vehicles were stopped before export through ports in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. The pilot targets transnational organized crime networks that use stolen or fabricated identities to obtain vehicle financing and insurance before exporting vehicles overseas. Separately, in support of Canada’s National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft, FINTRAC generated 90 disclosures to law enforcement over the past two years, covering 76,097 transactions and 408 subjects of interest.
