The Central Bank of Cuba has put new 10,000 CUP and 20,000 CUP banknotes into circulation to meet cash demand and support an update of the country’s banknote range. Distribution begins through bank branches in Havana and will expand gradually nationwide. All existing banknote denominations remain valid, with no replacement or change to the current currency series. The issuance follows the introduction of 2,000 CUP and 5,000 CUP notes in March. The higher denominations are intended to facilitate cash transactions involving large nominal amounts during the country’s current inflation, while reducing logistics costs and speeding cash handling. The 10,000 CUP note features Haydée Santamaría and the 20,000 CUP note features Vilma Espín, with both including security features and tactile identifiers for people with visual impairments.
