The National Bank of the Republic of Tajikistan has published a review of the banking system’s transformation since independence, highlighting its progression from establishing monetary sovereignty and core institutions to strengthening regulation, financial inclusion and digital payments. As of June 30, 2026, the system comprised 69 financial credit institutions with assets of TJS 63.6 billion, capital of TJS 12.1 billion, deposits of TJS 36.9 billion and outstanding loans of TJS 16.9 billion. The review divides the transformation into three stages: building an independent banking and monetary system in 1991-2000, strengthening institutions and infrastructure in 2001-2014, and improving financial stability, risk management and digital services from 2015. Payment digitization has accelerated following the introduction of a unified QR code in 2023. By June 30, 2026, Tajikistan had 10,561 electronic payment terminals, 12.4 million payment cards and 19.8 million electronic wallets, while cashless payments for goods and services accounted for 41% of transactions in the first half of 2026.
