The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda issued amended directives for licensing insurance agents, consolidating a prior directive on registration with the Insurance Agents Association of Uganda into the core licensing requirements. The updated framework sets out an online application process, eligibility prerequisites, documentation requirements, and declarations applicants must make. Prospective agents must apply through the IRA Online Licensing Portal and, before registering, be members of the Insurance Training College pursuant to Section 139(8) of the Insurance Act, Cap 191. Applications must include specified personal and legal status details and supporting documents, including (for corporate agents) incorporation documents, a signed agency agreement, a passport-size photo, a certificate of competence, and a curriculum vitae where relevant. Applicants must also provide evidence of Insurance Training College membership and Certificate of Proficiency or, where not yet attained, results slips and evidence of a payment commitment fee, as well as a National Identification Card, Tax Identification Number, and evidence of current-year membership for both the Insurance Training College and the Insurance Agents Association of Uganda. Licence fees are set at UGX 100,000 for individual agents and UGX 200,000 for corporate agencies, with payment made against an invoice and proof of payment uploaded to the portal.
