The U.S. House Committee on Financial Services reported that the House of Representatives passed four committee bills covering coin production, financial fraud enforcement, regulators’ use of technology and whistleblower protections. The measures would end penny production, permit production of a more cost-effective nickel and provide guidance for consistent cash practices. They would also expand the permitted use of eligible federal grants for financial crime investigations and improve federal coordination and reporting on emerging fraud trends. The package would require financial regulators to assess their technological capabilities and identify ways to improve examinations. It would also extend whistleblower protections to federally funded contracts previously funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The coin bill passed by voice vote, while the other three measures passed by votes of 414-7, 417-7 and 424-0.
