The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has announced a new service schedule for the two “Coin Carts” operating under its Coin Collection Programme covering 24 March 2025 to 1 June 2025, with the schedule published on the HKMA’s dedicated webpage. The programme provides a free public service for exchanging coins for banknotes or adding value to stored value facilities, with collected coins re-circulated to meet demand. From the programme’s launch in October 2014 to 31 January 2025, the two Coin Carts completed 1,318,000 transactions and collected 1,017 million coins with a total face value of HKD 1,626 million. The carts operate across Hong Kong’s 18 districts on a rotating basis, typically staying at each location for a week, and run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with coin counting machines, staff assistance, and an electrical wheelchair lift. Location selection prioritises convenient sites that do not disrupt traffic and, where possible, have suitable power supply to reduce generator use, informed by public and district council feedback and consultation with the Transport Department and Hong Kong Police Force as necessary. The HKMA will review the programme from time to time and will continue to update the service schedule regularly to provide advance notice to the public.
