The Ghana National Insurance Commission has completed an ESG materiality assessment that identifies 15 priority topics for its sustainability strategy, enterprise risk register and first public sustainability report. The priorities will also indicate where the commission’s regulatory attention on sustainability is likely to focus, helping insurers align their ESG efforts. The assessment surveyed 80 internal and external stakeholders, who rated 28 environmental, social and governance topics. Governance accounted for eight of the 15 material topics and six of the top eight, with ethics, anti-corruption and integrity ranking first at 4.43 out of five. Consumer protection and policyholder rights ranked second and was the highest-rated topic among external stakeholders. Climate risks in the insurance industry was the only environmental topic selected, ranking sixth based on its implications for insurability, pricing and solvency. The work supports the commission’s voluntary adoption in 2026 of IPSASB SRS 1, Climate-related Disclosures, ahead of its effective date for reporting periods beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2028. The materiality findings will determine strategic emphasis but will not limit the disclosures required by the standard. The commission is targeting its first sustainability report for the end of 2026 and plans to repeat the assessment periodically.
