The South African Reserve Bank published its monthly statement of assets and liabilities, reporting total assets of ZAR 1.293 trillion at Sept. 30, 2026, up ZAR 13.37 billion from August. Gold and foreign assets increased by ZAR 12.85 billion to ZAR 1.236 trillion, driven by a ZAR 24.48 billion rise in foreign exchange reserves excluding special drawing rights, partly offset by a ZAR 12.87 billion decline in the reported value of gold. On the liability side, South African government foreign loans and deposits rose by ZAR 15.96 billion, while other deposits increased by ZAR 11.70 billion. Banks’ deposits fell by ZAR 9.72 billion, and the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve account declined by ZAR 3.98 billion. Notes and coin in circulation increased by ZAR 770.2 million to ZAR 178.14 billion.
