The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has announced a new service schedule for the two “Coin Carts” under its Coin Collection Programme covering 27 October 2025 to 4 January 2026, with the full schedule and programme details published on the HKMA website. Since the programme launched in October 2014 through 30 September 2025, the two Coin Carts completed 1,400,000 transactions and collected 1,072 million coins with a total face value of HKD 1,727 million, which are re-circulated to meet demand. The Coin Carts operate across Hong Kong’s 18 districts on a rotating basis and typically stay at each location for a week, with service hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; each vehicle has two coin counting machines, on-site staff support, and an electrical wheelchair lift. Users can exchange coins for banknotes or add value to stored value facilities such as Octopus Cards and e-wallets including AlipayHK, Octopus Wallet, Tap&Go and WeChat Pay, and the service is free of charge; a Community Chest donation box is also provided. Site selection prioritises convenient locations that do not disrupt traffic or pedestrians and, where possible, venues with power supply facilities (including Leisure and Cultural Services Department mobile library service locations) to reduce reliance on on-board generators. Location planning also reflects public and district council feedback and includes consultation with the Transport Department and the Hong Kong Police Force as necessary; the HKMA noted it will review the programme periodically and update schedules regularly to provide advance notice.
