The Registrar of Financial Institutions at the Reserve Bank of Malawi has published the list of financial institutions licensed and registered to operate in Malawi as at 31 December 2024, and cautioned the public to transact only with entities appearing on the register. The register spans banking, capital markets, microfinance, financial cooperatives, insurance and pensions. It lists eight licensed banks, one discount house, two credit reference bureaus, three development finance institutions, multiple holding companies, and a range of capital market participants including the Malawi Stock Exchange, brokers, collective investment schemes, investment advisers, portfolio managers, transfer secretaries and securities representatives. It also covers microcredit agencies, non-deposit taking and deposit-taking microfinance institutions, primary and secondary savings and credit cooperatives, insurers and insurance intermediaries (including agents, loss adjusters and claim settling agents), and pension services companies, trustees, brokers and pension funds. All licensed and registered financial institutions are required to prominently display their licences or registration certificates at their premises. The public is asked to report any dealings with entities not on the published list to the Registrar of Financial Institutions.
