The Bank of Greece has warned the public about internet scams that misuse the name and image of Governor Yannis Stournaras, as well as the Bank’s branding and personnel details. The scams use false articles, fake profiles and misleading advertisements to create the impression that the governor is involved in public disputes with well-known journalists or is endorsing online investment opportunities. The Bank said fraudsters are circulating AI-generated images and social media posts that redirect users to unreliable investment or crypto platforms. A similar false narrative involving a supposed altercation between a central bank governor and a popular journalist has also appeared in other Eurosystem countries, including Belgium. The alert follows reports from citizens about attempted scams abusing the governor’s name, the Bank of Greece logo and the names of other members of the Bank’s administration and staff.
