Payments Canada’s 2026 Canadian Payment Methods and Trends report finds that real-time payments appeal to a majority of Canadians, supporting the planned Q4 2026 launch of the Real-Time Rail. The system will enable instant, data-rich payments around the clock and is expected to support faster access to earnings, business funds and loan payouts. Its launch follows industry testing of participant connectivity, ISO 20022 messaging and centralized fraud services. The report also highlights broader changes supporting payment modernization. Expanded eligibility has brought more than 20 new members into Payments Canada, including payment service providers and local credit unions, while Lynx has completed its adoption of ISO 20022 and the government has implemented its Consumer-Driven Banking Framework. Fraud remains a central risk, with three in 10 Canadians experiencing scams involving attempted theft or loss of money or personal information over a 12-month period. The Real-Time Rail will therefore launch with mandatory centralized fraud services that complement participants’ internal controls.
