The Bank of the Lao PDR, together with the International Finance Corporation, held a consultation meeting with relevant public-sector bodies and other stakeholders on developing a national standard for classifying green business activities, referred to as the Laos Green Finance Taxonomy. The discussion forms part of the 2023–2027 Green Finance Development Project for Lao PDR supported by IFC. Participants discussed international and regional sustainable finance trends and the rationale for aligning the taxonomy with ASEAN and international standards, positioning it as a reference for financial institutions to provide green credit, for the private sector to structure green investment projects and raise capital, and for public authorities to design policies that promote environmentally friendly activities linked to climate objectives and the Paris Agreement. The session also exchanged views on core definitions and components of the taxonomy, including methods and criteria for selecting priority sectors to be covered in the initial phase.
