The Bank of Ghana has inaugurated the Non-Interest Financial Advisory Council as the national advisory body for the governance, regulation and supervision of non-interest banking and finance. The council will advise the central bank on sector-wide issues, including product assessment, interpretation of non-interest financial principles and consistency of market practices. The council will also support the Securities and Exchange Commission and the National Insurance Commission until those regulators establish their own advisory councils. Its role does not replace the supervisory, enforcement or regulatory powers of the relevant authorities. Under the wider framework, non-interest banking institutions must maintain their own advisory committees, while products must have transparent structures, risks, costs and obligations that customers can understand.
